But here's the thing. Those numbers describe a horizon. What's happening right now, in offices and on laptops across America, is something subtler, and in some ways, more insidious.

Here's what surprises most people. Workers in the most AI-exposed professions tend to be older, more educated, better-paid, and more likely to be women.

Computer programmers have 75% of their tasks covered by AI usage. Customer service and data entry workers follow closely. And theoretical AI coverage exceeds 80% in computer and math, business and finance, management, office and administrative support, and legal occupations.
The blue collar vs. white collar story got flipped. Nobody updated the headline.

This isn't just a coastal vs. heartland divide, though that's part of it. Ten countries will capture approximately 70–75% of global AI value creation by 2030, with the remaining 150+ nations sharing less than 25–30% of this economic transformation. That global concentration mirrors what's happening domestically, AI value accruing to specific cities, companies, and workers, leaving entire communities and sectors behind.

Universities That Are Getting It Right
Ohio State University unveiled an AI Fluency initiative that will embed AI education into the core of every undergraduate curriculum, equipping students with the ability to not only use AI tools, but to understand, question, and innovate with them, regardless of their major. Ohio State's effort requires all graduates, beginning with the class of 2029, to be fluent in the technology.
The State University of New York system also revised its information literacy curriculum to include requirements that students effectively recognize and ethically use AI.
That's meaningful. But it's worth noting: those are the class of 2029. The people in the workforce right now, the 35-year-old financial analyst, the 42-year-old marketing manager, the 28-year-old paralegal, they're not in any of these programs. They're learning on their own, or not at all.
Why Community Colleges Are the Unsung Heroes Here
If there's a genuinely hopeful story in all of this, it lives in the community college system. Community colleges are uniquely positioned to train the nation's AI workforce. They already educate nearly half of all undergraduates in the United States, with programs rooted in regional economies and built to adapt quickly to industry demand.
And there's real momentum. The National Applied AI Consortium has trained over 1,900 faculty across 337 colleges in 49 states and two U.S. territories, reaching more than 50,000 students, teaching hands-on courses in machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing.
That's not nothing. In fact, that might be the most underreported education story of 2026.
